“People are looking for hope,” publisher says.
Christian book publishers have seen an increase in sales of the Bible since the COVID-19 outbreak began.
With many people sheltering at home, and tiring of the constant barrage of news and television reruns, they are turning to books to pass the time, including the Bible.
Alabaster Co., which sells religious books geared toward the “Instagram generation,” reported a sales increase of 143 percent compared to last year.
“In this life-shattering and unprecedented pandemic, people are looking for hope and restoration,” said the co-founder and business director of Alabaster. He said people are purchasing the Bible as an encouraging gift for loved ones.
LifeWay Christian Resources said they have seen an increase in Bible sales also. Compared to last year, sales at LifeWay are up 62 percent as of last week.
“We believe this is no accident, as people often go to the Bible as a source of hope in times of crisis and uncertainty,” the LifeWay CEO said. “People draw hope from Scripture because in it they see a God who is with us during our suffering.”
Tyndale also reports a 44 percent uptick in Bible sales this year, including an increase for their Life Application Study Bible and Immerse Bible for study groups.
